Color Quantization, Superior Palettes?

Ah yes, how do you convert graphics from 24-bit full color pictures to 16 colors?

I have had mediocre results going down that path, perhaps it would be better if I had a better quantization algorithm but GIMP does not seem to offer algorithms that are good for 16 colors like Spatial Color Quantization. Besides, you can't use just any 16 colors in Keen. You have to use the DOS EGA palette.

The VGA patch sounds promising, allowing 16 but from a broader palette of 256. So can you think of improvements to the default 16 color palette? I'm thinking of replacing one of the grays with a flesh tone...

And do you have some recommendations for color quantization algorithms that are good for 16 colors (that you can also supply the palette for)?

I would point you in the direction of this nifty tool, TilesetPal: http://www.jazz2online.com/downloads/37 ... setpal-11/ You can build custom palettes and use them to reduce your 24-bit images quite niftily.
