Switching to Chocolate Keen

Post by lemm »

Since this mod has been in a rut for the last couple of years (mainly because I got distracted by Netkeen and then other Galaxy stuff), I suggest "porting" it to 32-bit, since we can now take advantage of the Chocolate Keen codebase.

There are a number of advantages to doing this:

1. Far easier to program and debug, since the mod is mega complicated now.
2. No more memory shortages or other limitations for sprites, tilesets, sounds, music, etc.
3. Since chocolate keen is written in C using SDL, it will be very easy for new programmers to contribute. There are not very many people who would want to program a hackish Dos frankenmod.
4. Chocolate Keen is very faithful to the original game.
5. CKCM would be the world's very first Chocolate Keen mod :)

The only "disadvantage" is that the game would no longer work on DOS; however, it will work on windows, linux, and possibly handheld devices too.

As I don't really want to continue programming it for DOS, the only other option (besides waiting longer) would be to scrap the current project and just go back to conventional keen 1 patching, which is roughly where we were in 2009, albeit with a lot less content than we have now.

Frankly I'd vote for going back to conventional. This mod is of such a scale now that I don't think it will ever get done without some simplification and condensing. You know how lazy keeners are.

ooooh, now that we have the source code for vorticons coming out, we could compromise and use that :p

I am quite confident that it is rather dead I'm afraid.

Yeah, without major simplification, this project isn't likely to go any further.

Spleen, stop beating this dead horse. It was made into glue sometime last year.
