Pirate Keen

As this is 7:15 I figured I'd release this little ditty and prepare for the onslaught of glitches and bugs people are bound to unearth. Ladies and gentlemen (Actually, are there any ladies left?) I present to you: The pirate mod:

Download it here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3940020/Pirates.zip

Based on an abandoned Ceilick classic this is my swansong of Vorticon modding. My attempt to show that there is life in those episodes yet despite keeners' love for the galaxy engines. Fight your way through 32 levels of vaguely pirate-themed goodness and pray that my level design capabilities have improved.

I will accept all praise and no criticism.

Is this on the pckf or a secret treasure for us who dwell in keen:modding?

Woah just glimpsed this as I was about to head off to the land of nod. Looks like good fun and very playable on initial inspection! Nicely patched as one would only rightly expect. Will return to further explore this neat little mod!! Those shark-heads had me heartily guffawing!

It locks up when I use the Dosbox debugger, but it works fine using the normal version of dosbox.

Weird.

Also, some levels just load a bunch of garbled tiles and then the game hangs.

Yeah; I've had problems with the fact that it is very sensitive to the environment DosBox runs in, which means a whole new set of patches are needed to optimize it for every system.

A more stable version might be this no-music version here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/394 ... 0Music.zip

Programs reacting to the presence of debuggers is not without precedent, but reacting to things outside of the emulator they are running on has got be a bug in Dosbox.

I get the occasional kill screen too, if it's any help (probably not). I'd try it on one of my real DOS machines, but I'm afraid they might catch fire.

May it be related to the fact that the DOSBox debugger should better be used in conjunction with core=normal? (Otherwise it can be "fun"...)

This looks like a really great mod, well done Levellass! I really like the way the palette changes make it look almost VGA-like, and the music is really good too! Plus new things like shooting upwards are pretty impressive, and I did laugh at "Keenrush the Tormentor" in the story :-)

Unfortunately I was only able to run the with-music version once though, now the game crashes after the "One moment" image and DOSBox freezes, no matter what core or CPU type I set. I get errors about trying to overwrite ROM-BIOS memory so I guess the music has overwritten code somewhere, since the no-music version works fine.

Anyway I just wanted to stop by to say you did a really great job with this mod!
