I use opl3.txt as a reference (it's 8-bit ASCII so will look cleaner if you view it in DOS.) I'd also recommend playing with SBTimbre as used in the tutorial at the start of this thread, as it is essentially a GUI that lets you tweak individual registers to hear how the sound changes. You can literally copy values off the SBTimbre screen and program them into the OPL registers to reproduce that instrument. Almost all the registers are for setting instrument properties, with the remaining few for setting note frequencies and playing actual notes.
