The monster thing has already been done in Keen 6.
With invisible blocks and goggles to see them, there could be a lot of hidden areas in levels earlier than the goggle level that aren't necessary for getting to the goggle level.

The item you need to pass the cemetery could be an invitation to a funeral that's happening. Poison gas could slowly spread across a level. That nodal map doesn't make sense to me. I guess Keen starts at the central green space. If so, the player could play both bridge levels and then complete both quests to get across both bridges, or even complete the quests before learning about them. Slugs and Slug kids are fully animated enemies. The Slug king can just be one frame of him sitting imperiously.
We could have Lick citizens and Lick soldiers that are fully animated enemies (no kids), and a Lick king that's one non-moving picture. (Iron crown, instead of gold?)
