Er, no.

16^256 = (2^4)^256 = 2^(4*256) = 2^1024

Which is a lot of tiles either way.

Yes, my widths are a power of 24 =).

I have another problem: it seems Keen:Vorticons (atleast) can't handle differently sized sprites for different animation frames. Is this an issue with ModKeen or is it inherent to Keen itself?

As a matter of fact...

It is a known behaviour - You have to make the widths of the sprites a multiple of 24 - that is, each of the three small images has to be multiple of 8 wide. I'm not sure if there are similar issues with other types of images, but the readme has info on that, too.

Scanning animation

I tried my hand at a stopping/scanning animation for the scissor guy.
